Myriapoda is an arthropod taxa, including millipedes, centipedes and others. Frupul comprises 13mii species total land. Although their name suggests that they have thousands of feet, the number varies from 10 to 750.
The body is elongated and its length varies. Over time they were found various fossils millipedes that were studied. Science that deals with the study of millipedes are called - Miriapologie.
Millipedes are common in wet forests. They fulfill an important role in rotting vegetation. Meet and species that live in grasslands, semiarid habitats or even desserts. They are generally considered dangerous to humans because they produce toxic secretions.
Millipedes inhabit areas under rocks, in the leaf litter, in rotting logs and occasionally in burrows which are all known as micro-habitats.
Many species are nocturnal hunters.
They feed on decaying leaves.
Millipedes body is divided into two regions: the head and the torso (called the thorax). On the back of the head is simple eyes, antennae, mouth parts and ventral opening.
The body is segmented, it consists of a varied number of segments, each carrying a pair of limbs. Some millipedes segments are merged, creating the impression that each segment is twice the number of States.
The legs are very short first segment for fixing and annihilation prey. Other States are mainly used in locomotion. Millipedes body is covered by a chitinous cuticle.
Internal body cavity called mixocel millipedes. The nervous system consists of poorly developed brain and nervous chain. Inetrne liquids are pumped by a dorsal tubular heart. Digestive tract consists of several regions.
Excretion is performed by the Malpighian tubule system tubes which are open at the boundary between the rear and the environment.
Millipedes are unisexual animals with internal fertilization. Gonads (ovaries and testicles) are merged. Mating takes place by transferring the male to female spermatophores.
Eggs laid by the female are rich in Nutr. Miriapozii are born with all segments developed resembling adults.
In some species juveniles hatch with a reduced number of segments and legs. Their number is completes in time during the moult.
Did you know that:
Given that they have many legs, in reality even species that have up to 750 feet runs quite slow
Most millipedes and prefer living in the northern hemisphere forests.
