Origins

The American Curl breed appeared in 1981 in Lakewood, California, when a black cat with long and silky hair and with unusual ears, appeared at the door of the Ruga family. She was let inside and fed, and the owners called her Shulamith. In december 1981 she gave birth to four kittens of which two had bent ears. The owners contacted a geneticist to study the phenomenon and it was confirmed that the unusual ear, probably inherited, was a genetic mutation.

Aspect American Curl cat

The American Curl breed is medium sized, has soft fur, silky and lying flat against the body. The American Curl is unique with its ears bent back. At birth the kittens have straight ears, and after 3-4 days they start to bend reaching the final form at the age of 4 months. At this age the professional breeder can determine the quality of the cat, relying on the degree of bending of the ears, correlated with the body type.

The maintenance of the fur will not give you too much trouble, you just need to brush it once (short hair) or twice (long hair) a week to prevent tangling and to remove dead hair. Its ears need more attention: at least once a month they must be cleaned carefully, not to irritate the pavilion cartilage, hard but thin and delicate.

Behavior American Curl cat

In terms of personality, the American Curl breed is people oriented, loyal and affectionate. Pushy and with a curious temperament, they will assist their human companions in anything they plan on doing. This cat loves human companion and adapts very quickly to any other type of animal, children or new situations. Although they are considered to be smart, they keep the kitten behavior even in adulthood. Apart from being available with either a short coat or long haired, the American Curl can be any color or coat pattern. Its eyes can also have an entire palette of colors.

Features American Curl cat

The distinctive feature of this breed is its unique ear shape. The ears are quite stiff to the touch, high and open, bending into an arch. This breeds ears were compared with those of the Lynx, with long tufts of hair accentuating the appearance of bent ears. We have to be careful handling the ears to avoid breaking the cartilage.
